1928 - The Mack Sennett Studios, known for two-reel comedies and the Keystone Kops, opens and the surrounding area becomes known as Studio City. 1929 - Sennett becomes the first producer to use RCA sound equipment to produce singing short subjects with a young unknown named Bing Crosby.
1933 - The Great Depression bankrupts Sennett and the Studio becomes Mascot Pictures, producing the Saturday serials which always end with the heroine tied to the railroad tracks . . . . “continued next week.”
1935 - Mascot joins with Monogram Pictures, Consolidated Film Industries and several other independents and becomes Republic Studios. There are six sound stages and several more support buildings. Republic produces over fifty features a year starring, among others, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck.
Early 1950’s - Republic enters the new medium of Television and produces a number of series. By this time Republic has grown to twenty-three sound stages and the largest scoring studio in the world.
1963 - The Republic Studios facility is renamed CBS Studio Center.
1967 - CBS purchases the studio and long range improvement plans begin. The lot continues to grow through the 70’s, producing such TV classics as Gunsmoke, Big Valley, Family Affair, Gilligan’s Island, Get Smart, My Three Sons, Bob Newhart, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
1982 - CBS and 20th Century Fox form a joint venture including ownership and operation of CBS Studio Center, with a new name "CBS/Fox Studios".
1984 - Fox sells its interest in the Studio to MTM and the facility becomes "CBS/MTM Studios". Shows produced on the lot during the 80’s include Roseanne, Different World, Thirtysomething, St. Elsewhere, Newhart, Hill Street Blues and Falcon Crest.
1992 - CBS acquires MTM’s interest and once again the "CBS Studio Center" sign appears at the gate. Seinfeld, Grace Under Fire, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Cybill, and Caroline in the City are just a few of the shows produced during the 90’s. Movies such as Father of the Bride 2, Dr. Doolittle, and I Love Trouble are also filmed on the lot.
Today the Studio continues to grow. Some of the more recent hit shows produced at CBS Studio Center include CSI:NY, Will & Grace, Malcolm in the Middle, Bernie Mac, According to Jim, Still Standing, Big Brother and That 70’s Show.
CBS Studio Center is now home to a brand new Broadcast Center which houses CBS2 and KCAL9.
